The duration of each dash is 4 seconds, and the duration of the interval between two consecutive dashes is 1 second. The radiotelephone alarm signal consists of two tones transmitted alternately over periods of from 30 seconds to 1 minute. The use of any of the foregoing signals except for the purpose of indicating that a vessel or seaplane is in distress, and the use of other signals that may be confused with any of the previously mentioned signals Attention is drawn to the relevant sections of the Merchant Ship Search and Rescue Manual, and the following signals: A piece of orange-colored canvas with either a black square and circle or other appropriate symbol (for identification from the air) A dye marker Signals used in situations of distress and search and rescue are shown in figure 6-2 (Distress) and are prohibited. figure 6-3 (Lifesaving signals).
