TheMk 46 torpedo is configured with aircraft-launchaccessories for either helicopter or fixed-wing aircraftlaunching.The basic items of accessory equipment used inlaunching torpedoes from fixed-wing aircraft andhelicopters are the torpedo air stabilizer and suspensionband assembly. The torpedo air stabilizer ensures apredictable air trajectory and water entry withouttorpedo structural damage. The air stabilizer reducesthe descent speed of the torpedo relative to the speed ofthe launching aircraft. A static line or release lanyarddeploys the parachute when the torpedo is droppedfrom the aircraft. The deployed parachute stabilizes thetorpedo during descent to the water, slows the descentspeed to an acceptable velocity for water entry, andassures the proper water entry angle.
