. Turn the topping-off valve cap 1 1/2 turnsto the right when the assembly hose is attached.. Pump the handle until desired inflation isachieved.. Then turn the valve cap 1 1/2 turns to theleft.. Remove the hand pump and secure it inthe accessory container.NOTE: The main flotation tube is dividedinto two separate sections by an internal bulkhead. This design feature prevents the life raft fromcompletely deflating if for some reason the tubeis punctured.Righting Procedures.— The LRU-12/A liferaft may inflate upside down. To correct thisproblem proceed as follows:1. Locate the righting line on the side of theraft opposite the CO2 bottle.2. Toss it over the life raft on the side wherethe CO2 bottle is located.3. Grasp the righting line and climb onto thebottom of the raft. Pull the righting line from thefar side and at the same time stand up and pushthe near side of the life raft away with your feet. This will cause the life raft to flip over.Boarding Procedures.— In most cases, thereare four or more survivors in the water. Uponreaching the life raft, grasp the lifeline to keepthe raft from drifting away until your turn toboard. Use the boarding stirrup and the boardinghandles at the stem to board the life raft; survivorsshould board one at a time. The first survivor to board the life raft shouldassist the remaining survivors and ensure the liferaft loading is balanced to protect againstoverturning.LRU-15/A LIFE RAFT ASSEMBLY.— TheLRU-15/A life raft assembly (fig. 5-23) consistsof a 20-man life raft and an inflation assembly( C O2 cylinder with an inflation valve). The raftis orange and has two single compartments, circular flotation tubes connected by an equalizertube, a noninflatable floor suspended between thetwo flotation tubes, and two boarding ramps. Oneramp is attached to each tube on opposite sidesof the raft. The floor has an inflatable floorsupport. The life raft also features a sea anchor,a lifeline, boarding handles, and topping-offvalves located on each side of the flotation tubesand floor support. The life raft and accessorycontainer are contained in the LRU-15/A carry-ing case. The life raft assembly is stowed eitherin an accessible area inside the fuselage (droppabletype) or in a life raft compartment (wing orfuselage installation) of the aircraft.Inflation Procedures.— The wing-installedLRU-15/A life raft assembly is automaticallyejected and inflated from the life raft compart-ment of the aircraft when the compartment dooris released. To inflate the droppable LRU-15/Alife raft, you perform the following steps:. Locate the inflation assembly actuatinghandle outside the end flap of the carrying case.l Pull the actuating handle with sufficientforce to actuate the inflation assembly. Ensurethat adequate space is provided for the raft toinflate.NOTE: This is a very large life raft andshould never be inflated inside an aircraft.Righting Procedures.— Because of the larges i z e a n d c u m b e r s o m e c o n f i g u r a t i o n o f t heLRU-15/A life raft, it is designed with identicalcomponents on each side so that the raft is alwaysright side up.Boarding Procedures.— Survivors shouldboard the LRU-15/A using the boarding rampson the lower flotation tube (boarding is possibleover the ramp attached to the upper tube but isextremely difficult and therefore not recom-mended). As you board the life raft, grasp thehandles provided and kick with your feet to pullyourself into the life raft. Boarding can beaccomplished more easily and quickly if survivorsare assisted by those who board first. The first person in the life raft is responsiblefor installing the equalizer clamp. The clamp isin a pocket located next to the equalizer tube. Theequalizer clamp is necessary to prevent the life raftfrom completely deflating in the event one sideof the life raft has a tear or puncture.RAFTSMANSHIP.— We assume that with allthe advanced rescue equipment and technologyavailable to the Navy, a rescue can be effectedin a few hours. However, the possibility exists thatyou may spend days or even weeks at sea.5-18
